Naming and Classifying Quadrilaterals
The students will learn to describe, classify and compare quadrilaterals by using drag and drop activities to practice vocabulary and by drawing quadrilaterals.

I can:

I can describe, classify, and compare quadrilaterals based on their sides and angles.

Tech Skills:
  • Drag and Drop

  • Simulaiton

Materials and Resources:
Grade Level:
  • 3rd Grade

Subject Area:
  • Math

Procedure:

Activity 1

  1. The students should have prior experience with describing the sides and angles of polygons; greater than a right angle, less than a right angle, right angle and the terms parallel, intersecting, and perpendicular.

  2. This activity can be used as a practice/review after quadrilaterals have been introduced.

  3. Review what a quadrilateral is by using the Quadrilateral Powerpoint.

  4. Use Math Talk to check that the students understand that quadrilaterals are four-sided closed shapes that have only line segments for sides. Quadrilaterals can be classified by their sides and angles.

  5. Display the Shape Guess Game for students. Tell the students that they will be playing a game to practice classifying quadrilaterals. Students will read each clue and eliminate shapes correctly from the game board based on the clue.

  6. Play one round of this game as a class to show the students how the game is played. After the first clue, ask students to come to the board/computer to select the correct shapes based on the clue.

  7. After finishing the first round, ask the students to open the site on their computer and start a new game with their math partner. They will play all 5 rounds with their partner.

Work with students in small group who need support with this activity.

  8. Students who finish early may complete the Quadrilateral Concentration game with a partner who is also finished with the first game.

  9. When everyone is done with the Shape Guess Game, meet back together to review the learning target and to review the characteristics of quadrilaterals.

As an exit slip, the students will be completing an activity on Go Formative. They will be able to access a prepared worksheet at Go Formative with the Quick Code, PVCM343.

Standards:

3.G.A.1 Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals). Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories.

MP2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively

MP4 Model with mathematics

MP6 Attend to precision
